The Eco Challenge

Case Study

The homeowner utilizes URC Total Control® to conserve energy while enjoying automation ease throughout this green home.

Nestled in the westernmost part of Canada lies British Columbia. There, Mother Nature’s handiwork is on full display with lakes, mountain ranges, rivers and parks created to protect its diverse ecosystems. This is where a retired firefighter and prominent business owner initially called upon Dynamic Multimedia Solutions’ co-owners, John Semple and Don Santolla, to help him make his house more eco-friendly via home automation. Initially, the homeowner only thought of accessing and controlling the lights and entertainment sources throughout his contemporary, timber-framed home. To his delight, he discovered he could also keep his home secure and further reduce its carbon footprint by integrating control of door locks, cameras, shades and thermostats.

“We were determined to give him exactly what he wanted in a way that would enhance his eco-conscious lifestyle. With no crawl spaces, attic or space between the main floor and basement ceiling, proper pre-planning was critical to ensure we had all the material we would need for this much integration,” says John Semple. “URC’s Total Control® was the obvious choice,” adds Don. “It was the ideal solution for this job because of its ability to integrate seamlessly with so many subsystems.”

The URC Solution

Case Study

The home makes great use of light by combining recessed LED lighting and overhead lamps with the natural lighting from wall-sized windows and skylights.

Keeping energy conservation and entertainment in mind, the team at Dynamic Multimedia Solutions installed LED lighting everywhere. LED bulbs conserve energy, cost less to operate and have an average useful life in excess of 20 years. All the lighting is on the Total Control system, so the homeowner can easily control any light using the URC remotes, in-wall keypads plus smart phones or tablets thanks to the URC Mobile™ app. “What’s called the link feature is one of his favorites,” explains Don. “He can essentially connect all rooms to control global features in the house. He no longer has to walk room to room to turn all the lights on or off as one example. ” For added convenience, the homeowner enjoys being able to preset lighting for specific household events. The hallway aquarium remains a guest favorite. It lights up at a certain time every evening, no effort required.

Another energy efficiency homerun? Remote sensor thermostats—eleven to be exact. Total Control helps the HVAC system reach its full automation potential to keep this oceanfront beauty humming at a comfortable temperature year round. Windows and shades open and close in harmony with the air conditioner to help the home cool more quickly and save energy. Each room is continuously monitored and the temperature adjusted, leaving the family free to focus on reveling in the beauty just beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows of this private oasis.

Life Made Simpler with Tech Touches

Case Study

Lighting everywhere! At dusk, light automatically bathes the home’s rooftop deck—perfect for taking in the breathtaking views.

With minimal hours of programming, John and Don delivered a system that goes above and beyond the owner’s original expectations. “Total Control made our job easier. It allowed us to work closely with the homeowner to conjure up control ideas he hadn’t originally thought of and deliver solutions that he doesn’t have to think about,” notes Don Santolla. “Guests are immediately won over by the home’s high-tech touches.” The homeowner agrees. “I love entertaining, and it’s so much simpler in this home.” Firing up the perfect music playlist and adjusting the volume takes only seconds and, as guests arrive, one look at a nearby remote or touch screen lets him know who’s at the front door. When the doorbell is pressed, his smart phone rings.

Life remains stress-free for the owner even while he’s away. “Since he’s on the road quite a bit and has lots of people that stop by, he definitely makes the most of accessing his security system from his phone,” says John. “He can remotely let anyone in, monitor their activity while they’re inside and remotely lock the doors once they leave.”

One can hear the ocean waves lapping at the shore when they reach the driveway and entry to the home is effortless. One button press activates a welcome home “scene” that opens the garage door and turns on the lights right from his electric car. Another button press on his phone grants him keyless entry to the home. The project has made the eco-conscious owner a true believer in the value of home automation to increase energy efficiency, and in this case Total Control was the charm.
