A Choppy Challenge

Case Study

Even when out on the water, you can choose from a variety of control devices.

With more than 300+ miles of inland waterways, Fort Lauderdale is aptly named The Venice of America. This is where Fernando Roig, recreational angler par excellence, can enjoy both freshwater and saltwater fishing. Like new homeowners who personalize their homes to meet their needs and lifestyle, Fernando and his family planned to build their new Viking sport fishing yacht, Karma, and add automation to match their list of cool cutting-edge technology wishes. Having the 70-foot yacht, Karma, capture video records of Fernando reeling in his largest catches topped their A /V must-have list. These South Florida residents needed someone to help them make every wish come true. They called on the team at Atlantic Marine Electronics (AME), a subsidiary of the Viking Yacht Company, for help. General Manager Todd Tally and Quality Control Delivery Supervisor John Krug both agreed there was one, and only one, system that could help this family of three enjoy the benefits of having automation anchor their on-board experiences—URC Total Control®.

The URC Solution That Sails

Karma goes beyond the average yacht automation overhaul. She is now equipped with audio, video, lighting, shading, security/ remote video monitoring and navigation systems. With one button press, the family can see, access and control each system from anywhere on the boat via their Apple devices, one of three TRC-1080 Wi-Fi color remotes or the TKP-2000 in-wall color touchscreen keypad in the main salon. First up? Lighting. The AME crew was tasked with adding a lighting design that would create a well-lit environment and include color changing applications. Besides interior LED lighting, the yacht features a custom lighting addition to the galley’s counter top. The family now enjoys meals atop a kaleidoscope of colors. “It was Fernando’s idea, we were able to implement it and it’s one of his favorite features,” explains Todd. The lighting fun extends to the outside of the yacht where a Lumishore Color-Change underwater LED lighting system displays lighting changes in sync to whatever music is being played onboard.

Next on the upgrade to-do list was camera integration for video recording, security and remote monitoring. Using the URC Mobile™ iOS app, each family member now monitors activities on the yacht both when aboard and from afar thanks to five discretely placed Gost Marine Mini-Ball cameras. High-definition underwater cameras also record coral reefs teeming with marine life. By contrast, for full HD-quality recordings of priceless family moments, one button press brings the high-tech KEP marine camera recording system to life. The most recent Karma cameo? Fernando reeling in a 250-pound marlin.

“What’s cool is that besides the yacht’s impressive lighting, camera and recording system upgrades, we were also able to show this family how to control their thermal imaging system via Total Control,” says Todd. Whether to help the captain see through glare on the water during daytime excursions or to improve nighttime navigation, the thermal gear complements other components within this marine marvel’s navigational suite.

There are other video and audio entertainment options too. The main salon, cockpit and each cabin houses Samsung TVs and Apple TV receivers for easy watching of on-demand movies, TV shows, live sports and news. Audio is routed to various areas via the Total Control system so no one is ever without their favorite tunes. URC’s network DMS amplifiers stream music from every audio source and coupled with URC’s PSX-2 iPod dock, every iPod® on the yacht instantly becomes an easy-to-navigate personal music server.

Seafaring Smarts

Case Study

“Sometimes we’re gone for two or three months cruising the waters around the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, the Dominican Republic or some other destination,” says the yacht owner. “It’s comforting to know we don’t have to schedule our vacations around system upgrades and that we can rely on the system to be up and running while we’re out at sea.”

“We’re always mindful of our clients’ desires to have their vessels handle the most demanding sea conditions while entertaining in luxurious style,” says Todd Tally. “These are not homes that sit in one place. If we need to perform a service, it’s not a matter of dispatching someone in a truck. Our product choices are largely based on reliability and URC’s Total Control solution certainly meets this requirement.”

“URC Accelerator™, the URC setup software, allows us to add other rooms or devices in a remarkably simple way. What used to take hours can now be done in minutes,” says John Krug. “It’s also great that we can use the offsite programming feature to make any updates we need to, from anywhere, at any time.”

The Total Control solution has garnered praise from AME’s client as well. “I love being able to pull out my phone to turn lights on or off or to turn on the stereo system,” concludes Fernando. “As for the women in the family, my 13-year-old daughter Ava loves having her own Xbox console in her stateroom. And my wife Melissa, well, she loves it all.”
