By Doug Cole
URC Senior Vice President and General Manager
Let me begin by thanking you for your loyal support of URC. Together we've grown and improved over the years, and with your help we'll continue to progress and get stronger. Youour customerare the most important part of our success story.
At CEDIA EXPO 2010, URC will introduce more than a dozen exciting new products that will complete our transformation from a provider of Home Theater control products into a provider of Whole House control solutions. It's a natural progression for us, and we'll make it a smooth transition for you, too.
URC Senior Vice President and General Manager, Doug Cole, checks out URC's new office space.
Our new Total Control lineup initially consists of 14 items. Twelve are whole-house automation products; only two are remote controls. The Total Control line is scalable from a single room to an entire house, and has been designed from the ground up with you, the custom professional installer, in mind. Please visit us at CEDIA for a closer look. We'll be in Booth 1746.
Don't worry, we haven't been so busy as to forget our world-class training! We're offering 15 training classes in all at CEDIA, and you'll have the opportunity to become certified to sell our Total Control equipment. We're proud of our continued commitment to CEDIA professionals, particularly in the areas of training and technical support. Over the last few months, we've launched URC University, your all-in-one training facility that's available to you 24/7. It's part of the URC Control Room, a password-protected website that's the exclusive domain of custom integrators like you. We also offer live webinars six times each week and, like all URC training, they qualify for CEDIA CEU credits that help you maintain your credentials.
If you've been following us in the news you've noticed that we're paying more attention to the commercial market segment. It's an important category in its own right, and it's of growing importance to many residential installers. We recently hired a dedicated and experienced national sales manager, Jamie Finnegan, to head up our commercial business unit. Over the next few months, we'll introduce a number of new products particularly suited to industrial applications.
Action speaks louder than words, and we hope you can tell that URC sees an even brighter future ahead. We've confidently invested in new technology. And we've added the most valuable of resources: key people in new key positions. We're positioned to dominate the whole house control market and we want you to make the transition with us.
See you at CEDIA!
- Doug

Programming Advisory: 64-bit Windows and the MSC-400
Do you program URC products using a 64-bit edition of Microsoft Windows on your PC? If so, please note that there are no compatible 64-bit device drivers available for our MSC-400 Master System Controller. The MSC-400 can only be programmed using 32-bit editions of Windows.
If you're a fan of the MSC-400, don't let the absence of 64-bit device drivers deter you from specifying one, or from reprogramming an already-installed unit. The obvious, easy workaround is to break out the old 32-bit PC if you still have one lying around.
Otherwise, an alternative solution exists if you're using Windows 7. Microsoft provides a 32-bit XP plug-in. Go to the driver downloads section on Microsoft's website and download it; the plug-in will enable some PCs to run Windows XP in a virtual environment. There's even a test feature that will help you check if your PC is compatible.
We attest to the fact that 32-bit operating systems are continuously dubbed as "legacy systems," and rightfully so, since they offer significantly less access to virtual and physical memory than their 64-bit counterparts. However, we can confidently say that the MSC-400 has stood the test of time, and we will continue to support it to the fullest in a 32-bit environment. It remains very well-equipped to handle all of your contemporary automation needs.

URC Becomes Time Warner Cable's Primary Remote Control Supplier
Big news arrived for our subscription broadcast division last month: Time Warner Cable announced that URC will become its primary vendor for customer remote controls.
Time Warner Cable, the second largest provider of cable and broadband services in the United States, said URC now will supply 80 percent of its customer remote controls. The contract, which runs through 2011, more than doubles URC's previous business with Time Warner Cable. In a press release, the service provider lauded URC's "technologically advanced remote controls that are simple and easy to use."
URC's track record for responsive customer service and its ability to supply specialty remote controls, such as devices with larger numbers for people with poor eyesight, were also key factors that drove the expanded relationship.
"We're delighted that we have been chosen by Time Warner Cable to be its primary supplier of remote controls," said URC CEO Chang K. Park. "This significant expansion of our relationship, which started nearly 10 years ago, confirms our mutual commitment to high quality and outstanding customer service. We sincerely appreciate the confidence TWC has placed in us, and the validation of our vast control code library."

Product of the Month: MRF-260 RF Base Station
If you've been installing our RF remotes, you likely know our MRF-260, a compact, fully addressable RF base station compatible with our many Narrow Band RF-equipped remote controls. It features an integrated Narrow Band receiver and antenna, two fixed line outputs for IR emitters, and two adjustable line outputs, each of which can be matched to the IR input on any component that a standard IR repeater can operate.
The MRF-260 offers super-high reliability to installers and their clients, and delivers it all at a low price of $149. As we introduce our Total Control products at CEDIA EXPO this month, the MRF-260 gains new utility, in that it combines with our RFTX-1 antenna module to provide RF control of a legacy projector, for example, in an otherwise IP-based control system.
The MRF-260 extends the reception range for compatible remotes up to 100 feet away through walls, floors and doors, indoors or outdoors. It eliminates the line-of-sight requirement, and can even be concealed in cabinets for true "Barrier Free" control. In addition to improving devices' range and reliability, it improves spurious adjacent signal rejection, ignoring unneeded signals. Its bright red LED status light flickers to alert installers and end users to the presence of RF interference.
The MRF-260 also works with our MSC-400 Master System Controller, which seamlessly harnesses the power of sophisticated home entertainment systems, to provide options and advantages not otherwise available.

Anthony Tomanelli, Assistant Manager, URC Technical Support
URC Team Members of the Month
Anthony Tomanelli, Assistant Manager, URC Technical Support
Anthony joined URC in April 2007, and he's been on the ascent here ever since. He began as a customer service representative for URC's retail line of remotes, but in his spare time ("in between phone calls," he explains) he took the initiative to learn all about our professional remotes. In 2008, that hard work paid off, as Anthony became a technician for our complete line of professional products. On a quest toward management, he began to take on supervisorial roles in his department, and last January, he became URC's assistant manager of tech support.
"A typical day for me here at URC starts at around 8 am, when I sift through my emails from the night before and prepare myself for the day's antics," says Anthony. Those antics include scheduling and making sure there is always ample phone coverage in tech support, as well as handling "many escalated, time-sensitive issues." Anthony spends the rare free time he gets keeping himself educated on all of URC's up-and-coming products and creating helpful documents both for his staff and for our professional installers.
"I try to stay very down to earth when assisting customers," says Anthony. "I like our customers to feel comfortable when they talk to me. I still receive calls and emails from customers I assisted almost four years ago when I was still supporting the retail line, and I'm always glad to help them out."
Anthony's passion for problem-solving lines up perfectly with his key role in URC tech support. "One of my favorite aspects of the job is that at times I get to play 'Colombo,'" he says. "Often, a customer will have an issue and the resolution is not as apparent as others. Sometimes, I need to examine an installer's file with a magnifying glass to find the cause of the issue, but it's that much more rewarding in the end. That's what I'm all about: I love to figure out how things work. The more I know, the happier I am. My ultimate goal is to become the all-knowing master of time, space and dimension...and then I'd like to visit Montana."
The technical prowess Anthony displays on a daily basis is a matter of nurture, not nature. "I wish I could say I have an extensive background in electronics, but alas, I cannot," he explains. "Prior to URC, I worked as a buyer for Tower Records, communicating directly with our sales reps and ordering product for the store. Realizing I was meant for greatness, I needed to put my brain to better use. Thanks to URC, I am now operating at full brain capacity. I am currently working on levitating objects with my mind.
"That is a true testament to URC. Since I've been with the company, I've received the most in-depth training from the most respected trainers we have to offer, which has made me the super genius I am today."
CEDIA EXPO 2009 was a vital experience for Anthony. "It was my first trade show, and a huge eye opener for me," he says. "I always knew the electronics industry was huge, but to be right smack dab in the middle of it all was surreal. Getting to meet some of the people I speak to on the phone every day was fun. It was great to finally be able to put the faces to the names I've come to know as my regular callers. Everyone was so nice and I learned a lot."
A common refrain we've heard from previous Team Members of the Month (and we promise, we didn't put them up to it!) is echoed by Anthony. "As cliché as it sounds, I love the people I work with," he explains. "I have never before felt like I was part of a family in the workplace, as I do here. It is refreshing to work for a company that truly recognizes and appreciates hard work and loyalty like URC does."
Born and raised in the Bronx, Anthony currently resides in Hartsdale, N.Y., with his wife. "My first passion in life was and will always be music," he says. "Since I was a wee lad, I've been introduced to many genres, which has led to my well-rounded knowledge of all music. Today, I play guitar, bass and sing. In my free time I like to write and record original music in my home studio."
URC thanks Anthony for his dedication, skill and open mind, and we highly appreciate his efforts to serve our customers with great distinction!

Your Business
By Glenn Gentilin
URC Regional Product Specialist
You've decided to realistically look into adding lighting control to your projects. You agree that the URC Lighting by Lutron products can provide a robust experience for your customers, as well as a very straightforward programming process for you. There's just one question left: How do I convince my customers to buy it?
We're here to help. Here are two very simple ways to market these products to your customers:
Add lighting to your demo. Show the products in action during your system demo. Carry a few URC Lamp Dimmers on your truck as tools with pre-programmed RF addresses. When you program the A/V system, simply add control of the Lamp Dimmers along with everything else. Just create the Device in the software.
Next, in Macros, add the Lighting scenes. This will be as easy as Aliasing an extra step for Lighting in each Macro. Finally, simply plug the customer's lights into the Lamp Dimmers.
Hand the remote to the client during the system demo. The client will see the lights are changing along with the programmed Activities. They'll probably even point this out to you. Once the client actually sees it happen, then he or she will understand it, and it becomes easier to sell it. Simply tell them what the additional costs will be.
The programming requires just a couple of minutes on your part, but the up side can be very big. If the customer still declines, simply unplug the Lamp Dimmers. There's no need to alter the programming. The addition of the Lights Device on the remote will only remind clients of what they could have had. Maybe they'll change their minds down the road.
Add URC Lighting as a line item on all system proposals. You already list the TV, A/V receiver, speakers, sources, programming, installation labor and parts. Why not add lighting, too? The worst thing that can happen is that the customer will ask you about the lighting, which is fine because it starts the conversation you wanted to have when you listed it as a feature. When the customer finds that lighting will cost just a few hundred extra dollars, he or she will often OK it, since it doesn't add much more to the overall cost in the grand scheme of things, but it adds so much to the enjoyment of the system.
One final point: We've found that dealers are selling control and equipment into other rooms based on the lighting installed in the family room or home theater. The customer calls, says he loves the ease of operating the lights, and asks if you can add the same feature in his bedroom. You think fast and remind the client that there is no remote in the bedroom. The client asks, "Well, can't you put a remote in the bedroom too, then?" Bingo: You've sold lighting, a remote and, often, new equipment into additional rooms.
So carry a few URC Lamp Dimmers on your van. They could be the key to a significant expansion of your client's system.

Hank's Absolutely Free Tip of the Month
By Hank Eisengrein
URC Regional Training Manager, East
"Back to School to learn and earn"
Your pal Hank here with some more tips for you, as another CEDIA EXPO beckons.
Back to School time has come and, in many parts of the U.S., class is already in session.
Thanks to the hard work of loyal URC employees over the past few months, you can also go "Back to School" with the exciting URC University, your new center for URC learning and education. To access all of this great information, you must sign up for both the URC Control Room and URC University. (Don't share your account with your coworkers, either, because URC University offers you the chance to complete quizzes and earn "BlueBucks" that can be redeemed in $25 increments for gift cards!)
URC University offers a host of both sales and technical training classes that expand your knowledge and help you earn more money selling and installing URC custom/professional products. Make sure to check out the Network Series product sales and technical quiz and after you complete that you'll be URC Network Certified. The "What's Hot" page of the URC Control Room has more details.
So take advantage of all of the 24/7 on-demand classes and quizzes on URC University. Find live URC training sessions near you with URC training staff. Take our free URC Webinars, hosted by URC's John Martin, with a schedule of different sessions set for every month on a wide range of topics. It's all there on the URC Control Room!
Attend CEDIA EXPO trainings and "Meet the professors"
If you're attending CEDIA EXPO this month, please make time to attend live training from the finest training staff in the custom installation industry. As you've likely heard, there will be many exciting new developments from us at CEDIA, so this will be a great place for you to attend classes in order to kick off the third quarter of 2010 and beyond. Come to several live classes and meet your favorite training manager. Interact with your fellow custom installers and gain valuable information to help grow your business and make more money during these unique economic times.
Check out our CEDIA class listings on the URC Control Room and the CEDIA EXPO website. And in case you need further encouragement, our classes will feature gifts and raffle prizes along with our famous CEDIA training discount purchase form to reward you for attending URC trainings. Arrive early as these classes fill up fast!
Party with URC and CE Pro!
On Thursday night during CEDIA EXPO, make sure to attend the annual URC party. A large cast of URC employees will be there to host you and your fellow installers on what is certain to be a fun evening! Look for the exact information in email blasts from both URC and CE Pro.
Another URC Lighting tip
Still not adding URC Lighting by Lutron to every sale? Add a LIGHTS icon or text button on the main pages(s) of every remote that you program. Now you tell your customers that every URC custom/professional remote can control much more than just audio and video. It'll also help set you and your company apart from dealers who sell on price alone.
An upstate New York installer at the SPM Marketing show in Rochester in March taught me that he puts a "Light" icon on every remote he sells. He's an MX-980 guy, and that starts the conversation with every client about expanding the A/V system to include URC Lighting products. Let the remote help you sell more to increase profits and, at the same time, create happier customers.
Finally, a CEDIA tip
Haven't booked a room for CEDIA yet? Stay in the Buckhead section of Atlanta and take the free CEDIA shuttle busses, or use the Breeze discount card on the MARTA train. Take this advice and you'll thank me later. Also: DO NOT USE PRICELINE to find a DOWNTOWN HOTEL.
I look forward to seeing everyone at CEDIA!

Strictly Commercial
By Robert W. Durbin
URC Systems Integration Engineer, Commercial Division
In-wall touch screen controllers are a crucial element in every sports bar automation plan for several reasons. The most obvious is convenience, but there are others:
- Their stationary, built-in nature eliminates the possibility of theft or misplacement.
- They allow bar staff to make fast, easy system adjustments from multiple locations.
- The color touch screen graphic schemes available on many of these controllers, such as URC's KP-4000 Network Keypad, look absolutely lustrous in low-light restaurant/bar environments, providing that extra "wow" factor.
- Because they can be hardwired on the network, they offer that ultimate sense of security in the event of wireless communication disruptions.
All told, in-wall controllers possess huge advantages over handheld controllers in such environments in today's sports bars. Our KP-4000 can cover all facets of your next bar automation project.
But that doesn't necessarily mean there's no need for handheld controllers in these projects. Quite the contrary! They're an obvious necessity as well. A wand-style handheld remote is especially helpful when employees are on-the-go and too far from a keypad to see a screen or make configuration changes.
Let's say, for example, that every TV in the bar is showing baseball or basketball, and a group of patrons requests to watch a soccer game. The easy answer is to change the channel. However, consider what this task would entail if the employee doesn't know what channel the soccer game is on. Better (or worse) yet, what if the employee knows the channel number of the network on which the game is airing, but the bar's channel-changing scheme is based on a distributed system that doesn't correspond to that of the bar's cable or satellite provider?
What does the employee do? The in-wall keypad is at the other end of the bar, and it's loud. Imagine the ensuing debacle, with the employee yelling out channels to the other end of the bar.
A portable handheld remote can save the day and prevent this scenario from transpiring. We recommend that shop owners assign handheld remotes to a few staff members (designated TV drivers?). Remotes are easily carried in apron pockets, leaving hands free for wielding food and beverages.
A typical sports bar needs both wand-type and in-wall touch screen controllers. Both offer distinct advantages, and they're much more effective when specified together. They're pretty much inseparable... much like sports and bars are!

Tech Tips
By Joe Salvatore
URC Technical Support Manager
This month, I'm sharing some tips on incorporating RS-232 as a communication protocol in your installs. Here are some simple steps that will assist you in ensuring that all of the gear you spec "shakes hands" in the equipment rack nicely.
Before we begin, please note: This article is not intended to be an RS-232 primer. It's simply a quick, precise troubleshooting guide. For a complete RS-232 course, please visit URC University, accessible through our dealers-only URC Control Room.
OK, back to our troubleshooting. Follow the steps below in sequence to rule out specific inconsistencies one by one:
- Confirm that your codes are accurate. Whether you use a code from our database or write your own, verify that it's accurate by using your PC to send and receive RS-232 codes (ASCII only) through HyperTerminal, a free app included with MS Windows. Open HyperTerminal by clicking on Start, Accessories and then Communications.
- Ensure communication parameters match manufacturer specs. Reference the manufacturer's documentation to match the Baud Rate, Data bits, etc., when programming in CCP. This will rule out any obstruction in data flow.
- Verify that you are using the appropriate cables. Check specifications to see if the component you are controlling accepts a Female or Male DB9 cable, as well as whether or not a null modem or straight through cable is preferred. Quick tip: Always carry a null modem adaptor and a gender switcher for testing purposes.
- Make certain the component you intend to control does not require a wake up command. An initial RS-232 "wake up" code is sometimes required to prepare a component to receive RS-232 requests. Also, consider that some devices have an internal menu option that switches RS-232 communication On and Off. Refer to the manufacturer's specifications for a definitive answer.
If you get to a point where you feel you've exhausted all of your resources, call the manufacturer of the device in question for more specifics. Remember: the individuals who write technical documentation are like you and me. They're human, and they make mistakes too.
If what the manufacturer specifies has not worked for you, it's always a great idea to try the exact opposite of what they've indicated. For example, I always try a null modem adaptor even when documentation says otherwise. You'd be surprised how often this can resolve an RS-232 communication challenge!
For further support on this tech tip, please email us at techsupport@universalremote.com.

Envy Loading Screen
For the second consecutive month, our featured Tool Box App is from the mind of Braden Napier, a custom professional who possesses extensive knowledge about URC and URC products. Braden's Envy Loader, available for download to URC installers for $10, gives you a great-looking screen to show to your client as a macro is loading.
Envy Loader features an animated "Countdown" screen (from 5 to 1) and a loading bar on the bottom. The text on the top of the loader is fully configurable.
The program currently supports our Network Series controls (KP-4000, MX-5000, MX-6000), as well as our ever-popular MX-980. Envy Loader comes complete with instructions, the original PSD file for the background (to edit the text areas, etc.) and a CCP file that can easily be imported into any project within seconds.
To access Envy Loader and many more apps in the URC Tool Box, log on to the URC Control Room.
Haven't checked out the Tool Box yet? What are you waiting for? Do it today! Just log onto the URC Control Room and click "URC Tool Box" on the left side of the home page.
